Compensation: $18/hr
Job Summary: The Prop Artisan at The Ruth and Nathan Hale Theater is responsible for assisting in the design, construction, and maintenance of props used in theatrical productions. This role requires a combination of artistic creativity, craftsmanship, and technical skill to create and manipulate props that contribute to the storytelling and visual impact of each production. The Prop Artisan works under the supervision of the Props Supervisor and collaborates closely with Directors, Designers, and Production Teams to achieve the artistic vision of the show.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Prop Construction and Assembly:
- Assist in the construction and assembly of props using various materials and techniques, such as woodworking, sculpting, and molding.
- Follow design plans and specifications to ensure props meet artistic and functional requirements.
- Utilize hand tools, power tools, and machinery safely and effectively.
Painting and Finishing:
- Participate in painting and finishing props to achieve desired textures, colors, and aging effects.
- Mix and match paint colors to replicate design concepts and maintain consistency.
- Apply techniques such as distressing, aging, and faux finishes under the guidance of the Props Supervisor.
Prop Maintenance and Repair:
- Assist in the maintenance and repair of props throughout rehearsals and performances to ensure they remain in excellent condition.
- Follow protocols for the proper storage, handling, and care of props to extend their lifespan.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Collaborate closely with the Props Supervisor, Scenic Designers, and Production Teams to understand prop requirements and timelines.
- Communicate effectively with team members to coordinate prop logistics and resolve any issues during rehearsals and performances.
Safety and Compliance:
- Adhere to safety standards and regulations for prop construction, handling, and use in theatrical settings.
- Participate in safety training and follow protocols to ensure a safe working environment.
Organization and Inventory Management:
- Assist in organizing and maintaining the prop shop, including inventory of materials, tools, and supplies.
- Keep workspaces clean, organized, and safe for efficient workflow.
Skills and Educational Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent; coursework in theater arts, fine arts, or related field preferred.
- Some experience in prop construction, scenic painting, or related craftsmanship; theater or production experience is a plus.
- Basic knowledge of woodworking tools, painting techniques, and materials used in prop construction.
- Strong attention to detail and craftsmanship.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, creative environment.
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required by production schedules.

Compensation: $16.00 - $18.00 Hourly DOE
