The Ruth Academy, the educational branch of The Ruth and Nathan Hale Theater, is a premier training ground for young performers in Utah and beyond. With a mission to inspire, train, and empower the next generation of artists, The Ruth Academy offers world-class instruction, mentorship, and fully staged productions in a professional theater environment. The Opportunity

The Ruth Academy seeks a dynamic, strategic, and visionary Managing Director to lead its continued growth and success. This role combines entrepreneurial business leadership with a commitment to educational and artistic excellence. The Managing Director will oversee all aspects of the Academy’s operations, including strategy, finance, fundraising, staffing, enrollment, and production budgets, ensuring the Academy’s sustainability and long-term impact.

The ideal candidate is an accomplished executive with a track record in nonprofit, education, or mission-driven organizations, skilled at balancing financial stewardship, operational management, and community engagement. Experience in the performing arts or education is strongly preferred but not required.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic & Executive Leadership

  • Provide strategic direction, executive oversight, and long-term vision for The Ruth Academy.
  • Partner with the Artistic Director of The Ruth and Nathan Hale Theater and the Executive Leadership to align the Academy’s mission with organizational goals.
  • Act as the Academy’s chief ambassador, cultivating strong relationships with donors, parents, educators, and community leaders.

Financial & Business Management

  • Lead all financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, tuition structures, payroll, and reporting.
  • Drive revenue growth through tuition, ticketing, sponsorships, and philanthropic support.
  • Ensure fiscal responsibility and sustainability through disciplined financial management.

Fundraising & Development

  • Lead donor cultivation, sponsorships, and grant development to secure resources for scholarships, productions, and programming.
  • Build and maintain strong philanthropic relationships to advance the Academy’s mission.

Operational & Production Oversight

  • Oversee day-to-day operations, including enrollment, scheduling, staffing, and facilities management.
  • Contract faculty, accompanists, and administrative staff, fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, and collaboration.
  • Provide executive oversight for Academy productions, ensuring they meet budget, schedule, and quality expectations.

Marketing & Community Engagement

  • Collaborate with the marketing department on brand, marketing, and communications strategies to grow enrollment and elevate visibility.
  • Act as a key representative of The Ruth Academy in the community, strengthening partnerships with schools, organizations, and families.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in business, nonprofit management, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 7–10 years of progressive leadership experience, with proven success in nonprofit, education, or business management.
  • Demonstrated expertise in strategic planning, organizational leadership, and financial management.
  • Successful track record in fundraising, development, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Exceptional leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to balance high-level executive responsibilities with hands-on management when needed.
  • Passion for arts, culture, and education, with a strong commitment to advancing The Ruth’s mission.
