Applications are continuously open for volunteer ushers and Community Advocate Team members, and roles are filled as needs arise. You may not be contacted immediately, but your application will be retained and active for up to one year.
Current Opportunities
Volunteer Usher
Volunteer ushers typically work one shift per week, with average shifts running 3-4 hours. Volunteers must be a minimum of 16 years old. Volunteers earn ticket vouchers redeemable for performances at The Ruth. Please be willing to commit to a minimum of four consecutive months. As a volunteer usher, you will welcome patrons in the lobby, provide seat-finding assistance, answer patron questions, check mobility equipment, provide directions, and ensure public areas of the theater are orderly and clean. Training is provided before your first shift. This flexible role is perfect for retirees, parents, or students who want to be part of the magic but have a light time commitment.
Volunteer Community Advocate
Community Advocates represent The Ruth in the towns and cities where they live, serving as vital connectors between the theater and the broader community. This volunteer role requires 10–12 hours of service per month and is open to individuals 18 and older. Advocate responsibilities may include staffing The Ruth’s booth at local festivals and farmers’ markets, meeting with city councils, school educators, and community groups to promote upcoming productions and events, and assisting with setup and teardown at select theater events. Advocates are also expected to attend quarterly in-person training meetings at The Ruth. Some local travel is typical, and volunteers must provide their own transportation. Scheduling is completely flexible, and team members are asked to commit to a minimum one-year term of service. If you’re passionate about the arts and community engagement, we’d love to have you on the team!
Production Volunteer
Production Volunteers typically work one-three rehearsal shifts per week, with average shifts running 3–5 hours. Volunteers must be a minimum of 18 years old. Volunteers earn ticket vouchers redeemable for performances at The Ruth. Please be willing to commit to a minimum of three consecutive months, or one full production. Working alongside our Stage Managers, you'll help prepare rehearsal spaces, and production materials, maintain an organized work environment, and tackle a variety of tasks that keep rehearsals and performances running smoothly. i.e. being on book during run throughs to support actors needing to call line. No previous theatre experience is required—training is provided before your first shift.
This is a hands-on opportunity to experience the behind-the-scenes magic of live theatre, learn directly from professional stage managers, and play a meaningful role in bringing each production to life.
