Position Title: Metal Fabricator/Carpenter
Location: The Ruth and Nathan Hale Theater in Pleasant Grove, Utah
Reports to: Master Carpenter
Time Commitment: 29 hours per week
Compensation: $18.00 - $20.00 Hourly
Position Type: Part-time, Non-Exempt, At-Will Employee

Position Summary:

The Metal Fabricator/Carpenter is responsible for constructing, assembling, and installing scenic elements with a focus on metal fabrication, while also supporting carpentry needs for theatrical productions. This role requires strong welding, fabrication, and metalworking skills, complemented by proficiency in scenic carpentry. The Metal Fabricator works closely with the Master Carpenter, Lead Metal Fabricator, and other shop crew to bring creative visions to life on stage in a safe and efficient manner.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Fabrication and Construction

  • Fabricate and assemble scenic elements, including set structures, rigging supports, and specialty pieces, using metalworking techniques.
  • Weld, cut, and shape steel, aluminum, and other metals based on technical drawings and design specifications.
  • Apply carpentry and woodworking skills as needed to integrate metal and wood scenic elements.
  • Ensure all fabricated elements meet safety standards and production specifications.

Installation and Strike

  • Assist with installation and rigging of scenic elements on stage, including both metal and wood components.
  • Participate in strike and removal of scenic elements after productions.

Maintenance and Repair

  • Perform maintenance and repairs on scenic elements during production runs.
  • Maintain tools, welding equipment, and shop machinery.
  • Keep the work area clean and organized.

Safety and Compliance

  • Follow all safety protocols for welding, fabrication, and scenic construction.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Report any safety hazards or damaged equipment.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Additional training or education in welding, metal fabrication, carpentry, or technical theater strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience in metal fabrication and/or welding, preferably in a theatrical, production, or construction environment.
  • Carpentry experience required, with strong ability to integrate wood and metal scenic elements.
  • Proficiency in welding (MIG, TIG, or stick), metal cutting, bending, and shaping.
  • Strong carpentry and woodworking skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and shop drawings.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in both fabrication and scenic construction.
  • Excellent teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required by production schedules.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy materials and equipment
