Job Summary: The Master Electrician is responsible for overseeing the implementation, maintenance, and safe operation of all lighting elements for theatrical productions. Working closely with the Lighting Designer, Technical Director, Head of Lighting & Media, and Production Team, the Master Electrician supervises the installation, circuiting, focus, and programming of lighting systems and ensures that all equipment is properly maintained and operated.

Responsibilities:

Planning and Coordination:

  • Collaborate with lighting designers to interpret lighting plots and ensure accurate implementation.
  • Develop and manage lighting schedules, including load-in, focus, technical rehearsals, and strike.
  • Coordinate with other departments to integrate lighting with scenic, sound, and projection elements.

Installation and Setup:

  • Oversee the installation, rigging, and focusing of lighting equipment for all productions.
  • Ensure that all lighting fixtures, dimmers, cables, and control systems are properly installed and operational.
  • Manage the setup of practicals and special effects lighting.

Operation and Maintenance:

  • Operate lighting consoles during technical rehearsals and performances as needed.
  • Conduct regular maintenance and troubleshooting of lighting equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  • Implement safety protocols and procedures for all electrical and lighting activities.

Technical Support:

  • Provide technical support and training to the lighting crew, board operators, and other staff members.
  • Assist in the programming and operation of lighting consoles and control systems.
  • Address any lighting or electrical issues that arise during rehearsals and performances.

Inventory and Documentation:

  • Maintain an accurate inventory of lighting equipment and supplies.
  • Keep detailed records of equipment usage, repairs, and maintenance.
  • Prepare and distribute lighting documentation, including light plots, instrument schedules, and cue sheets.

Team Leadership:

  • Supervise and mentor lighting technicians, electricians, and interns.
  • Foster a collaborative and positive working environment within the lighting team.
  • Ensure that all team members adhere to safety standards and best practices.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Technical Theater, Electrical Engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in theatrical lighting, including supervisory experience.
  • Proficiency in lighting control systems, such as ETC, GrandMA, or similar platforms.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical systems, lighting fixtures, and rigging.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and irregular hours as required by production schedules.
  • Physical stamina and ability to lift and move equipment and materials.
