Position Summary: 

The Audio Engineer 1 (A1) at The Ruth and Nathan Hale Theater is responsible for advanced operation, and maintenance of audio systems during rehearsals and performances. This role requires a high level of technical expertise in live mixing, and troubleshooting, as well as leadership skills to oversee and mentor junior audio staff. The A1 collaborates closely with the Sound Designer, Head of Audio, and production team to ensure superior sound quality and execution for theatrical productions. 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Advanced Sound Operation: 
    • Operate and maintain audio equipment, including digital consoles, wireless systems, and signal processors, during performances. 
    • Mix nightly shows according to artistic requirements of Sound Designer & guidance from Head of Audio. 
    • Ensure consistent and high-quality mixing for all production elements at every performance.
  • Leadership and Mentoring: 
    • Supervise and mentor Audio Engineer 1 (A1) and other audio staff members, providing guidance and training on sound operation techniques and procedures. 
    • Coordinate and delegate tasks to junior audio staff to support efficient production workflows and achieve artistic goals. 
  • Collaboration and Communication: 
    • Collaborate closely with the Sound Designer, Head of Audio, and other production team members to integrate sound designs into overall production plans. 
    • Communicate effectively with performers, stage crew, and other departments to coordinate sound cues and transitions during rehearsals and performances. 
  • Safety and Compliance: 
    • Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures related to audio equipment and operations. 
    • Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations for sound reinforcement and electrical safety. 
  • Documentation and Reporting: 
    • Maintain accurate documentation of sound cues and show script for each production. 
    • Provide regular updates to the Head of Audio on the status of audio equipment and any issues encountered 

 Skills and Qualifications: 

  • Education Requirements: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional working experience. 
  • Experience in Job Type: Minimum of 4-5 years of experience as an A1/Audio Engineer in a theatrical or live event setting. 
  • Skills Required: 
    • Proven expertise in using digital audio consoles, wireless microphone systems, and audio processing equipment. 
    • Strong leadership and mentoring skills with experience supervising junior audio staff and delegating tasks effectively. 
    • In-depth knowledge of sound reinforcement principles, microphone techniques, and audio signal flow. 
    • Familiarity with theatrical “Line by line” mixing. 
    • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, creative environment while maintaining attention to detail and quality. 
    • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot technical issues under pressure. 
    • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and irregular hours as required by production schedules. 
    • Physical ability to lift and move heavy objects, set up equipment, and work at heights.
