Director's Note
by Jennifer Hill-Barlow
At first glance, The Addams Family seems to be a story about a peculiar family who finds comfort in moonlit gardens, haunted ancestors, and all things delightfully dark. They celebrate the mysterious, the macabre, and the magnificently unconventional. But look a little closer, and you'll discover something surprisingly familiar.
At its heart, this is a story about love, family, and the courage to be authentically yourself.
If we're honest, we've all wondered if we truly belong. We all carry quirks, imperfections, and perspectives that make us unique. Yet so often we spend our lives trying to fit into someone else's idea of "normal." The Addams Family reminds us that the things that make us different are often the very things that make us extraordinary. Their unwavering acceptance of one another is both hilarious and deeply moving. They don’t love each other despite their differences. They love each other because of them.
That message is especially meaningful to me.
At The Ruth, we believe this is Where Story Lives. Stories have the power to entertain us, certainly, but their greatest gift is reminding us what it means to be human. They invite us to laugh together, see ourselves in someone else’s journey, and leave just a little more connected than when we arrived.
This production marks an exciting first for our theater. Rather than simply building a set, we reimagined our entire performance space, inviting the world of The Addams Family to spill beyond the stage and into every corner of the room. From the moment you entered, our hope was that you felt as though you had wandered through the gates of the family estate and become a guest in their wonderfully mysterious home. Every choice was designed to draw you deeper into their world because that’s what we believe theater should do. It should invite us to step inside the story.
Creating that experience has been the inspired work of an extraordinary team. My heartfelt thanks to Sayoko, Justin, Mike, Ashtyn, La, Bekah, Tim, Renee, Megan, Dianna, and Kacey. Your creativity, craftsmanship, collaboration, and countless hours of work have filled every corner of this production with imagination and heart.
To our remarkable cast and crew, thank you for your trust, your commitment, and the incredible artistry you’ve brought to every rehearsal and performance. You have embraced these iconic characters with humor, heart, and fearless joy. It has been an absolute privilege to tell this story alongside each of you.
And finally, thank you for joining us tonight. Live theater exists because audiences choose to gather together and share a story. We are grateful you’ve chosen to spend your evening with us.
As you spend the next couple of hours with this remarkable family, I hope you’ll laugh and snap often, embrace the wonderfully unexpected, and perhaps recognize a little of your own family along the way. Because every family has its own brand of strange, and maybe that’s exactly what makes them so extrordinary.
Welcome Home!
