Director's Note
by Ben Roeling
If you know the movie Beetlejuice, you know to expect something spooky, strange, chaotic, and a whole lot of fun. Beetlejuice Jr. brings all of that to the stage, but it also gives us something more: a story with a lot of heart. At its core, this is a story about grief, family, and wanting to be seen.
Lydia is grieving her mother while feeling increasingly disconnected from her father and the world around her. But Lydia sees something everyone else seems to miss: the dead are still very much a part of her world. That became an important idea for us as we created this production. Rather than treating the spirits as something separate, we wanted them to feel like they are always just beneath the surface.
We also wanted to have fun with the strange and unexpected world of Beetlejuice. Our goal was to create a place where the rules can bend, the supernatural can feel completely natural, and our young performers can be fearless in their imagination.
One of my favorite parts of this process has been watching this cast make the show their own. They have brought so much creativity, personality, humor, and heart to the work. One of my goals throughout this process has been to help each of them become more confident not only as performers, but as individuals. Seeing their individual personalities emerge through these characters has been one of my favorite parts of the process.
I am incredibly grateful to Abby, Christian, Amelia, all of our designers, and the entire team at The Ruth for all the work they have put into making this production come to life. And to our cast, thank you for bringing your creativity, energy, and individuality to this show.
Finally, thank you to the families and parents who support these young artists every step of the way, and to everyone who supports opportunities for young artists to learn, create, and perform. We are so grateful to have you here and hope you enjoy this wonderfully weird world of Beetlejuice Jr.
