Director's Note
Welcome to Pride & Prejudice! We've had so much fun in the design and rehearsal rooms and have long looked forward to sharing our joy and artistry with you.
I have a confession: I'm not a Janeite. I'm not even particularly a Darcy fan-girl. What I am is a lover of wonderfully peculiar people—and Jane Austen certainly gives us plenty of those. In this production, we've leaned wholeheartedly into the wonderfully specific behaviors, rhythms, and quirks that make each character feel utterly distinct...and surprisingly familiar.
Around the rehearsal room, we've semi-jokingly referred to our production as Love on the Spectrum: Regency Edition. Now that is a show I'm obsessed with. Whenever I lose hope in humanity or get bogged down by life's darker shadows, I sit down for a good binge session of Love on the Spectrum. There is something deeply courageous about watching people pursue love with such sincerity, celebrating every tiny victory, and surviving every awkward disappointment. It reminds me that beneath our supposed sophistication, we're remarkably simple creatures. We all want to love and be loved.
Although, if I'm being fair, I don't actually believe in "the one. "I don't think love is simple. I believe in conscientious choice and daily attention.
This year, my husband and I celebrate thirty-one years of marriage, although it has often felt like at least seven different relationships. (Think Taylor Swift eras.) Every few years, one of us changes so dramatically that we find ourselves saying, usually in the middle of an argument, "I don't even know you anymore!"
I used to think that was something to mourn. Now I think it's one of life's great gifts. I've had the privilege of loving many different versions of the same man, and he has conscientiously chosen many different versions of me. Again and again and again.
Maybe that's why one of my favorite moments in the novel isn't a declaration of love at all. It's Elizabeth's realization after reading Darcy's letter: "Till this moment I never knew myself." Austen seems to suggest that genuine love begins not with finding the right person, but with becoming honest enough to know yourself.
We can only meet the people we love at the place they are willing to meet themselves.
That's the journey every couple in Pride & Prejudice is on—not just Elizabeth and Darcy or Jane and Bingley, but Charlotte and Mr. Collins, Lydia and Wickham, and even Mr. and Mrs. Bennet. Every relationship succeeds or fails according to the stories these characters tell themselves about who they are and who the other person is.
So I invite you to find yourself among these familiar archetypes. Perhaps you'll recognize Lizzy's quick tongue, Jane's reserve, Darcy's social anxiousness, Mary's earnestness, Mr. Collins's spectacular inability to read a room, Mr. Bennet's retreat into sarcasm, Mrs. Bennet's frantic attempts to control those she loves, Charlotte's practicality, Caroline's insecurity, Wickham's effortless mask, or Lydia's impulsiveness. These aren't simply Regency personalities. They're human ones.
That's why we continue reading Austen's novels and flocking to every adaptation within driving distance. Truthful writing—and truthful acting—holds, as Shakespeare wrote, "the mirror up to nature." Through Austen's wit and delicious dialogue, we catch glimpses of our own pride, our own prejudice, and perhaps our own capacity to grow.
We hope you'll also catch a few musical Easter eggs we've tucked into the production—a tiny nod to Bridgerton to help bridge the centuries for younger audiences. More importantly, we hope you'll fall in "like," or perhaps even in love, with these remarkable characters all over again.
And if this production sends you home looking at someone you love with just a little more curiosity, a little more generosity, and a renewed willingness to choose them as they are today—not as they were five years ago—we will have done our job.
As Jane and Bingley so beautifully express:
"I feel you understand me."
"I believe I do."
