Director's Note

By Rob Moffat

When considering a story as vibrant and fantastical as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, one might first think of Gene Wilder, or Johnny Depp, golden geese, lickable wallpaper, and fizzy lifting drinks. One might picture Veruca Salt singing “I Want It Now!”. If you have come to see that show, I am glad you are reading this.

In 2013, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray, Catch Me If You Can) created a new musical version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory that takes a charming new look at the beloved characters from Roald Dahl’s book. This new adaptation pays homage to the 1971 film in nostalgic ways, but uses the art of musical theatre to explore the quiet, profound magic at the story's heart: the boundless, transformative power of imagination.

Charlie Bucket, despite his poverty, is a child rich in wonder. His world is not defined by what he lacks, but by his endless capacity to imagine what could be. This inner wealth allows him to find beauty and possibility in the smallest things—a loving family, a humble meal, a fantastic story.

In the end, this inner richness is the true "Golden Ticket" that makes him worthy of the Chocolate Factory. His genuine, untarnished imagination is precisely what Willy Wonka is looking for in his successor. The other children—Augustus, Veruca, Violet, and Mike—are blinded by immediate, selfish desires. They miss the real magic happening right in front of them because they have traded wonder for want, and curiosity for craving. Their imagination has been stunted by entitlement and overconsumption.

Wonka’s factory is not just a building; it is a physical space created by an unfettered mind. The true journey is the test of who has the imagination—the essential creative spirit—to inherit it.

Interesting Facts

By Mark Fossen

Roald Dahl: The Spy Who Wrote for Children

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: golden tickets, rivers of chocolate, naughty children turning into blueberries and being whisked away through pipes of flowing fudge. But behind the candied world of Willy Wonka’s fantastical factory lies something else: secrecy, sabotage, and espionage — much like the real-life experiences of its creator, Roald Dahl.

Dahl-in-Garden-Shed-Writing
Roald Dahl writing in his garden shed, where he penned many of his famous works, including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Dahl, described by a wealthy female acquaintance as “drop dead gorgeous,” often used his appearance and charm to get to powerful men through their wives. One example of many was his relationship with Claire Booth Luce, the influential playwright, congresswoman, and wife of anti-British publisher Henry Luce. Dahl’s mission was to gather intelligence on Henry and sway his views on the war. To do that, he developed an intimate relationship with Claire, using their connection to access information he reported back to his superiors.

Young-Dahl-Military-Picture
The "drop dead gorgeous" Roald Dahl during his service as a fighter pilot in the Royal Air Force during World War II.

He was part of a circle of literary-minded spies that included Ian Fleming, who would go on to create James Bond, and Noël Coward, the playwright and performer who charmed his way through diplomatic circles. While Dahl didn’t work side-by-side with them, all three operated in the same cultural and strategic arena—where performance, narrative, and secrecy overlapped. Their experience in covert storytelling deeply informed their postwar writing.

Fleming turned his wartime adventures into spy thrillers. Coward used wit to satirize the upper classes he once infiltrated. Dahl took a different path—writing first for adults, then for children. But he didn’t leave the world of secrets behind. His books for young readers are laced with subversion, mischief, and hidden moral challenges. They reward cleverness, punish greed, and elevate the underestimated—values as relevant in espionage as in fairy tales.

Montgomery Blair High School Student Group Picture
Dahl, fourth from right, at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring in 1942, reviewing Victory Corps maneuvers as part of his official duties as an assistant air attaché for the British Embassy in Washington DC.

And nowhere is this more evident than in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. First published in 1964, it’s on the surface a fantasy about a boy who wins a magical tour of a candy empire. But at its core, the story is also about espionage. As Grandpa Joe explains: “… all the other chocolate makers in the world were sending in spies — dressed as workers! — to steal Mr. Wonka's secret recipes.” To protect his innovations, Wonka closed his doors, fired all his workers and eventually restaffed the factory with the loyal and mysterious Oompa Loompas.

At first glance, corporate espionage may seem like an odd setup for a children’s story. But seen through the lens of Dahl’s wartime experience, it makes perfect sense. He knew the value of secrecy. He understood how industrial and technological innovation could become national obsessions—and targets for sabotage. Wonka’s factory, with its locked gates and classified inventions, resembles a high-security lab or intelligence headquarters. The Oompa Loompas, discreet and loyal, could easily stand in for elite covert operatives.

Even the children in the story undergo a kind of psychological test. They each fail in their own way, except for Charlie, who remains humble, observant, and self-controlled. In the end, Wonka chooses him not for his cleverness, but for his character. It’s a quality Dahl no doubt came to value in wartime.

Will Wonka and the Chocolate Factory Movie Poster
Dahl thought the 1971 movie was "crummy", finding Wilder's portrayal "pretentious" and "soft." Dahl also disliked the film's title change to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory as well as the music and direction.

Dahl’s stories have proven remarkably adaptable, crossing from page to screen to stage with ease. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was adapted into the beloved 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, starring Gene Wilder. Dahl disliked it, mainly due to changes in tone and character. A darker 2005 film version followed, and in 2013, the story finally made its way to the musical stage in London’s West End, with a revised version later opening on Broadway in 2017.

These adaptations testify to the theatricality and imagination built into Dahl’s writing. His characters are vivid, his plots lean toward the spectacular, and his themes—justice, rebellion, truth—resonate across generations.

At least part of this appeal comes from the fact that Dahl once lived in a world of real secrets, where the stakes were measured in lives, not snozzberries. He knew how to guard a secret, but even more, he knew how to share one with children: sweetly wrapped in chocolate.

Roald Dahl on Stage

Several of Dahl's stories have been transformed into successful stage musicals:

  • Matilda the Musical (2010) became an international sensation, praised for its intelligence, heart, and powerful score by Tim Minchin.
  • James and the Giant Peach (2010) was adapted with music by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (Dear Evan Hansen) and has become popular in youth and regional theaters.
  • Dahl's Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Witches, and The Twits have also been adapted for stage (and in some cases, musical formats).

Look for these at your local library or bookstore!

Roald Dahl: Teller of the Unexpected by Jeremy Treglown

This is a comprehensive biography that explores Dahl's life and career including his time as a spy, his complex personal relationships, and the creation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Inside Charlie's Chocolate Factory by Lucy Mangan

This book is a beautifully illustrated and engaging history of the book, its adaptations, and its impact on readers and popular culture.

Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator by Roald Dahl

This is Dahl's sequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, sending Charlie, Wonka, and the Bucket family into outer space. Less well known and more chaotic than the original, it blends science fiction, political satire, and Dahl's signature weirdness.
