Dear Evan Hansen Auditions
The Ruth and Nathan Hale Theater is pleased to announce auditions for their upcoming production of Dear Evan Hansen. Auditions will be held in person and by video submission.
In-Person Auditions will be held on Thursday, August 27, 2026 in The Ruth Ballroom & Lounge from 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM.
*We will be holding one in-person day to start and will open more slots as needed. If necessary, we will add an additional day for in-person auditions to meet demand.
Audition Videos must be received no later than 11:59 PM on Monday, August 31, 2026 to be considered for callbacks.
Be aware that we may ask hopeful Evan's to send in a pre-callback self-tape of some material (materials provided) that would be due to us by Monday, September 7th. We will reach out to you if this is the case; please do not inquire.
Whether auditioning in-person or via video, everyone must submit the AUDITION FORM. Please read the form carefully and answer all questions and prompts.
Synopsis
A letter that was never meant to be seen, a lie that was never meant to be told, a life he never dreamed he could have. Evan Hansen is about to get the one thing he's always wanted: a chance to finally fit in. Dear Evan Hansen is the deeply personal and profoundly contemporary musical about life and the way we live it.
In-Person Audition Details
We will be hosting in-person auditions in The Ruth Ballroom and Club Lounge on Thursday, August 27. Singing slots will start at 6:00 PM. More slots may become available, so keep checking back or sign up for notifications from our booking site, Koalander.

We ask everyone to prepare approximately 30 seconds of a song in an upbeat, contemporary Broadway musical, comedy style. We kindly ask that you do not use backing tracks as a live accompanist will be present. Please bring your sheet music, either printed or in digital format. Reach out to auditions@theruth.org 48 hours prior to the audition if you do not have access to a printer and we can print your music for you.
Video Submission Details
For video submission, please film yourself singing 30 seconds of a song in an upbeat, contemporary Broadway musical, comedy style to be considered.
Begin with your slate (name only) and then launch into your song. Keep any instrumental introductions as brief as possible.
Make sure your video link is public and Google files are open to anyone with the link.
Videos are due 11:59 PM on Monday, August 31, 2026.
Everyone participating in an in-person or video audition must submit the Audition Form.

A Note About Casting -
At The Ruth & Nathan Hale Theater, we seek to honor the intentions of the works we produce. If nothing specific is given by the original playwright regarding the characteristics of any given role, and/or if those characteristics do not affect the intended story in any significant way, we will not consider any certain person or type over others when casting.
We will be exploring double and single casting options based on availability and interest. At this time, we are unable to offer AEA contracts on this project. Rates per role are pre-budgeted and non-negotiable.
We invite anyone and everyone to audition for any and all of our productions, regardless of any physical attribute, gender, race, age, ability, ethnicity, or experience. All are welcome at The Ruth.

(All roles are available. Out of sensitivity to the material, we will be casting actors over 21 to play the high school aged roles of Evan, Zoe, Connor, Jared, and Alana.)
Evan Hansen

Character Notes: Evan Hansen is a lonely, protective high school senior who routinely speaks before he thinks, masking a crippling self-consciousness. When a classmate commits suicide, Evan finds himself fabricating a close friendship with the boy to give his grieving, broken parents the closure they are looking for.
Heidi Hansen

Character Notes: Evan's mother is a fiercely determined, "bootstraps" single mother who is doing the absolute best she can while drowning in a sea of overwhelming responsibility.
Zoe Murphy
Gender: Female presenting
Age: Over 21, pass for high school age
Vocal Range: Pop Belter, F3-E5, with a G5
Character Notes: Zoe is a sensible, driven, and fiercely independent teenager who has learned to survive by keeping to the shadows of her turbulent home. She possesses a natural generosity of spirit but protects herself with a sharp, protective skepticism.
Connor Murphy
Gender: Male presenting
Age: Over 21, pass for high school age
Vocal Range: Easy Pop Baritenor, C3-G#4
Character Notes: Connor is a high school senior who presents a volatile exterior, masking himself behind drug use, aggressive outbursts, and apathetic detachment. Following his death, he reappears as a projection of Evan's mind.
Cynthia Murphy
Gender: Female presenting
Age: 35-50
Vocal Range: Mezzo, F3-E5
Character Notes: Connor and Zoe's mother is an upper-middle-class stay-at-home mother who is desperately searching for stability in her fractured family. A self-help tourist, she uses her wealth to chase every therapeutic fad and parenting trend available, yet she remains profoundly disconnected in her relationships with her husband and children.
Larry Murphy
Gender: Male presenting
Age: 35-50
Vocal Range: Baritone, Bflat2-G4
Character Notes: Connor and Zoe's father is an upper-middle-class father who has largely become an emotionally absent bystander in his own home. He has quietly given up trying to parent, retreating instead into a self-righteous emotional distance.
Jared Kleinman
Gender: Male presenting
Age: Over 21, pass for high school age
Vocal Range: Pop Tenor, D3-B4
Character Notes: Jared is a resourceful, quick-witted high school senior who uses a calloused exterior to keep others at bay. When Evan needs to validate his lie, Jared puts his tech-savvy resourcefulness to work, helping forge the fake email correspondence with Connor.
Alana Beck

Age: Over 21, pass for high school age
Vocal Range: Pop Mezzo, F3-E5
Character Notes: Alana is a resume-driven performatively congenial overachiever who channels her energy into endless extracurriculars. She prioritizes the public momentum over personal boundaries, actively ignoring requests to keep sensitive information private.
