Epilogue

Director's Note

An American in Paris is a story about falling in love - with a person, a city, and the power of art itself. Set in a Paris just beginning to heal after the devastation of World War II, it captures a moment where everything feels fragile, but full of possibility. Out of that rubble, beauty starts to bloom again. This show lives in that hopeful space - the moment between survival and rebirth - when art becomes the lifeline back to joy.

Historically, postwar Paris experienced a cultural awakening. Painters, dancers, composers, and designers returned, eager to rebuild not just a city, but an identity. This musical doesn’t shy away from that tension - the shadows of war are still present - but it leans hard into the belief that creativity can be transformative. The characters in this story are searching: for belonging, for connection, for meaning. And it’s through their art - through dance, music, and design - that they begin to find it.

The Gershwin score is the heartbeat of the show. There’s something magical about how their music can feel both timeless and immediate. It’s sophisticated, emotional, playful, and deeply human. It doesn’t just underscore the action - it is the action. These melodies invite the characters to move, to take risks, to fall in love. They carry us through the emotional high-wire act of this piece with grace and undeniable rhythm.

And then there’s the dance. Movement is the soul of An American in Paris. It’s how the characters express the things they’re not quite ready to say. The choreography is the storytelling - and I feel incredibly lucky to have had the brilliant Penny Saunders leading that part of the process. Penny brought such nuance, style, and integrity to every moment. Her work is layered with intention and heart, and I am beyond grateful for her collaboration, talent, and friendship.

Directing this show has been about more than just staging - it’s been about listening to what the piece needed to say right now. About giving space to the silences, to the glances, to the moments that live between a note and a step. It’s been about trusting that art - when made with honesty - can remind us what it means to be fully alive.

I hope as you watch this show, you feel transported. Not just to Paris, but to that tender, brave moment when we begin again - when we choose beauty, even after hardship, and allow ourselves to create and feel joy again.

With hope,
Jennifer Hill Barlow

Americans in Paris

The GI grew up in a generation when Paris to most Americans was a cheerful bawd: the Paris of Maxim's, the Ritz Bar, the Moulin Rouge […]. To the young man who had seen this Paris in pictures, who had read about it in Fitzgerald and Hemingway, who had overheard wise conversations between his father and his Uncle Tom, the Paris in which he found himself these last two winters was a grim and depressing disappointment. He found people who were cold, hungry, confused and tired-above all, tired-who were too busy keeping themselves alive to bother much about entertaining him […]. And the GI, in turn, felt cheated.. Where was the Paris he had heard about?

LIFE Magazine, Mar 18, 1946

Known for its gorgeous music and stunning dance, An American in Paris is, at its heart, a grounded story of the city in the years after World War II and the American artists who found inspiration there.

On August 25, 1944, as Allied Forces liberated Paris after four years of Nazi occupation, the city was economically devastated, politically fragmented, and morally scarred. Over a sixth of the buildings in Paris were crumbling, and its citizens were severely undernourished due to rationing. Ann Montgomery, a model living in Paris during the 1950s, described the city as "infected by a war-weary shabbiness that cast a despairing shadow over the grandeur of the ancient city." Deep and passionate divisions existed between those who had collaborated with the Nazi regime, and those who had resisted.

As the U.S. 4th Infantry Division entered the city alongside the French 2nd Armored Division, Parisians greeted American GIs with euphoria, kisses, and celebrations, encountering a city bursting with creative energy despite the scars of war. Bread rationing persisted until 1949, inflation soared, and many buildings remained in ruins, yet Paris began to reassert its role as a cultural capital.

As the City of Lights began to rebuild, the arts offered a refuge and a way for Parisians to process collective trauma. The city’s theaters, museums, and concert halls—many of which had continued operating during the German occupation—became the foundation for a postwar artistic renaissance. Leading figures like Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque remained active, producing works that reflected Paris’s resilience and transformation.

Americans formed a significant part of that artistic renaissance. A monthly stipend of $75 allowed expatriates to live comfortably in postwar Paris and the GI Bill enabled American veterans to study at Paris’s famed ateliers, including the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and Académie Julian. American expatriates, drawn by Paris’s storied artistic traditions, infused the city with fresh energy. Cafés, museums, and galleries became vibrant meeting places where painters and sculptors mingled with existentialist philosophers such as Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. The founding of Galerie Huit in 1950, a cooperative gallery on the Left Bank, symbolized this creative exchange and reaffirmed Paris as a hub for artistic collaboration.

The performing arts also experienced a significant revival. The Paris Opéra Ballet, under the leadership of Serge Lifar, played a key role in reestablishing Paris’s cultural prominence. Lifar’s tenure, though controversial due to accusations of wartime collaboration, reflected the city’s determination to reclaim its artistic identity. Ballet productions during this period blended classical tradition with modern innovation, mirroring Paris’s dual nature as both timeless and forward-looking.

Jazz clubs, often hidden in underground cellars, brought American blues and bebop to Paris, creating a distinctly Parisian take on the genre. These venues became spaces of cultural convergence where expatriates and locals shared ideas and performances. The vibrant jazz scene added a dynamic layer to the city’s artistic landscape, complementing its achievements in visual and performing arts.

By the early 1950s, Paris had become a sanctuary for American artists and veterans disillusioned by the conformity of postwar America. The city’s enduring beauty and cultural depth made it an ideal destination for those seeking inspiration. Paris’s population grew steadily, reaching 2.85 million by 1954, as its streets buzzed with the energy of a city rediscovering its identity.

As Paris evolved, so did its role in the global artistic landscape. While the city remained a beacon for creativity, many American artists returned home by the early 1960s, drawn by the burgeoning Civil Rights movement and the rise of artist-run galleries in New York. Yet, the legacy of their time in Paris endured, cementing the city’s reputation as a crucible for artistic innovation.

The contrasts of postwar Paris—its beauty against devastation, its timelessness against modernity—made it a compelling stage for art, culture, and resilience. The interplay of visual and performing arts during this period not only revitalized the city but also solidified its place as the cultural center of the Western world. These creative triumphs, set against the backdrop of a city rebuilding itself and balancing hope against tragedy, are at the heart of An American in Paris.
