Position Summary:The Ruth and Nathan Hale Theater is seeking a talented and creative Scenic Artist to join our production team. The Scenic Artist will be responsible for creating and painting backdrops, set pieces, and other scenic elements to enhance the visual storytelling of our productions. This role requires strong artistic skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively to achieve the artistic vision of each production.

Responsibilities:

Painting and Finishing

  • Perform scenic painting of sets, backdrops, props, and other scenic elements based on design specifications and artistic direction.
  • Utilize various painting techniques, such as faux finishes, texturing, aging, and stenciling, to achieve desired visual effects.
  • Ensure all painted surfaces meet aesthetic standards and enhance the overall production design

Coloring Matching and Mixing

  • Mix and match paint colors to accurately replicate design concepts and maintain color consistency throughout productions.
  • Create paint samples and mock-ups for approval by Scenic Designers and directors.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Collaborate closely with Scenic Designers and Scenic Charge Artists to understand design concepts and project requirements.
  • Participate in production meetings to provide input on scenic painting schedules, progress updates, and technical considerations.
  • Communicate effectively with production team members to coordinate painting efforts and resolve any design or technical issues.

Safety and Compliance

  • Ensure all scenic painting activities adhere to safety regulations and best practices.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure safe handling and disposal of painting materials.

Documentation and Maintenance

  • Maintain organized records of paint colors, techniques, and specifications used for each production.
  • Monitor and maintain the cleanliness and functionality of painting equipment and tools.
  • Assist with the inventory and procurement of painting supplies and materials.

Skills and Qualifications:

Educational Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Theater Design, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience preferred.

Experience in Job Type: 

  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in scenic painting, with demonstrated proficiency in various painting techniques.

Skills Required:

  • Strong artistic abilities and a keen eye for detail.
  • Proficiency in color theory, mixing, and matching paint colors.
  • Knowledge of theatrical production processes and workflows.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, creative environment.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required by production schedules.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Compensation: $16 to $18 per hour DOE
