Props Artisan / Inventory Specialist

Location: The Ruth and Nathan Hale Theater, Pleasant Grove, Utah
Job Summary: The Ruth and Nathan Hale Theater is seeking a talented and creative Prop Artisan to join our production team. The Prop Artisan will be responsible for the creation, modification, and maintenance of props for all theatrical productions. This role requires a diverse skill set in crafting, sculpting, painting, carpentry, and electrical along with a keen eye for detail and the ability to work collaboratively with designers and other production staff.
Responsibilities:
Youth Production Lead:
- Take primary responsibility for props design and execution on all youth productions. Collaborate with the Education Department, designers, and youth stage managers to create props that are ageappropriate, safe, functional, and within budget. Mentor student assistants or interns if assigned.
Inventory:
- Manage and maintain the inventory of prop and furniture stock.
- Create a digital inventory of the current stock and maintain it after each production.
Prop Creation:
- Design, construct, and finish props according to the specifications provided by the prop designer and director.
- Utilize various materials and techniques, including woodworking, metalworking, sculpting, casting, and painting, to create high-quality props.
- Modify and repair existing props to meet the needs of each production.
Collaboration:
- Work closely with the prop designer, set designer, and director to understand the artistic vision and requirements for each production.
- Participate in production meetings when needed and collaborate with other departments to ensure seamless integration of props with scenic and costume elements.
Project Management:
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring all props are completed on time and within budget.
- Maintain an organized and efficient workspace, including proper storage and inventory of prop materials and tools.
- Keep detailed records of all prop construction processes, including materials used, techniques employed, and time spent on each project.
Quality Control:
- Ensure all props meet the artistic and functional standards of the production.
- Conduct regular inspections of props to ensure they are safe and in good working condition.
- Make necessary adjustments and repairs to props during rehearsals and performances as needed.
Safety and Compliance:
- Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures when using tools and materials.
- Ensure all props comply with safety regulations and guidelines, especially those involving pyrotechnics, breakaway elements, or other special effects.
Team Leadership:
- Supervise and mentor prop assistants and interns, providing guidance and instruction as needed.
- Foster a collaborative and positive working environment within the prop department.
Innovation and Creativity:
- Stay current with new techniques, materials, and trends in prop making.
- Experiment with innovative methods and approaches to create unique and realistic props.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts, Fine Arts, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of 2-4 years of experience in prop construction and design.
- Proficiency in a variety of crafting techniques, including woodworking, metalworking, electrical, sculpting, casting, and painting.
- Strong artistic and creative skills with a keen eye for detail.
- Excellent problem-solving and time-management abilities.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and irregular hours as required by production schedules.
- Physical ability to lift and move heavy materials and props.
Compensation and Benefits:
Position Type: Part-Time, Non-Exempt
Hours to Work: 29 hrs. per week
Nature of compensation: Salary
Compensation: $16.00 - $18.00 Hourly DOE
