PLEASANT GROVE, Utah (ABC4) — The Ruth Theater in Pleasant Grove opened over the weekend, celebrating a new space to appreciate the arts in Utah County.
The theater’s grand opening was kicked off with a performance of the theater’s inaugural show, “Ragtime,” on Jan. 4.
The Ruth and Nathan Hale Theater at doTERRA, nicknamed “The Ruth” is the new home of the Hale Center Theater Orem. “The Ruth” will feature cutting-edge acoustics, an expansive stage, and intimate seating.
“The Ruth” is a new chapter for the Hale Center Theater Orem, offering more opportunities for local artists, talent, and educational programs.
Associate artistic director Jenny Barlow said the new theater presents an opportunity for more shows throughout the season, with this year’s including “Cinderella” and “An American in Paris” with a Ballet West collaboration.
In addition to holding more shows, “The Ruth” will also feature educational programs for those looking to develop their theater skills. When it came to the theater beginning its new legacy, Barlow said it was important to start it with a strong show.
“‘Ragtime’ is one of the most brilliant musicals written in the past 50 years, and the other really important thing for us was that it had a strong message,” she said. “‘Ragtime’ as a show is a beautiful story about three different families at the turn of the century in America. It deals with equality, It deals with freedom, justice, compassion, change … It’s a show that will leave you changed when you come to see it.”
With the new location, Barlow shared she is excited for current patrons to enjoy a new facility, as well as welcome more new faces through more shows and space.
“Hale Orem has been the theater in Utah County to produce the highest level of work, and now we have a building that matches the product,” she said.
“Ragtime” will continue to run at “The Ruth” through Feb. 22. Tickets and further season information can be found online.
“Come to The Ruth in Pleasant Grove,” Barlow said. “This is an amazing community asset. It’s here for everyone, whether you’re wanting to audition for a show, whether you’re wanting to enroll your children in some of our education classes, or if you as a family or friends or neighbors would love to see high high-quality theater in Utah County.
