The Scarlet Pimpernel, The Original Superhero Story
This summer, The Ruth Theater invites audiences to experience The Scarlet Pimpernel, a musical that blends history, humor, and romance inspired by the original superhero story.
Set during the French Revolution, the story follows a mysterious Englishman who secretly rescues innocent people from the Reign of Terror while carefully guarding his identity. As danger closes in, his double life tests his marriage, his friendships, and his commitment to a cause greater than himself.
For director David Morgan, the story's historical setting is part of what has always made it compelling.
"I've always been fascinated by the French Revolution," said Morgan. "It's a remarkable period of history, and the events of that time create the perfect setting for a story about courage, sacrifice, and hope."
Morgan also points to the title character as one of literature's earliest hidden heroes. "Long before audiences knew Batman or Superman, there was the Scarlet Pimpernel," he said. "The idea of someone living an ordinary life while secretly doing extraordinary things was something entirely new. That sense of mystery is still just as engaging today."
While the story is grounded in history, the production also embraces the theatricality of the era through its costumes, music, and staging, bringing eighteenth-century Europe to life on The Ruth's stage.
"The characters are fun, the world is beautiful, and it's been a joy to bring this story to life," Morgan added. "I hope audiences enjoy spending an evening with us as much as we've enjoyed creating it."
