Director's Note

by Barta Heiner

I have been somewhat of a pack rat throughout my life.  And lately, I have been going through old journals and multiple files boxes of memorabilia attempting to keep what is important and discard what is perhaps frivolous.

In doing so, many memories of mishaps and misadventures have been flooding back about past productions in which I have been involved:

  • Zippers breaking on stage in at least two productions
  • Fish-net stockings dropping to the floor during a dramatic scene
  • Eating pilaf that was “laced’ with gravel because the prop person had dropped the pan in the driveway before coming to the show
  • Having a fellow actress lose a key, so instead of pretending to close the door and lock me into my room, chose to stand silently inside my room
  • Having the same fellow actress forget to close and lock the same door, leaving it wide open when I was supposed to be locked in
  • Performing in a show alone with an actor who, because of a car accident, had a petit mal seizure on stage; causing him to have a brief “blank stare” and then jumping ahead two pages of script (which meant some pivotal pieces of information were left unsaid)
  • Being left of stage alone while Ruth Hale left the stage and went in search of the young man who had missed his entrance
  • Performing on stage with an actor who was “drunk” from taking too many pain pills after having been released from the hospital
  • Having a heavy spotlight crash on stage about two feet from where I was sitting with shards of glass flashing by my peripheral vision
  • Receiving whiplash from the elbow of a human “exploding bomb” during a war ballet
  • Performing another show with a neck brace because of the same whiplash
  • Performing in yet another show with a knee brace after having been in a car accident

How ironic that I should be directing The Play that Goes Wrong!

Please enjoy the show!

Serious Silliness

In 2008, a group of students from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art founded Mischief Theatre. Led by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields and filled out by other students they shared classes with, they started out as an improv group before finding the special combination of choreographed routines, jokes, and stunts that would mark their first scripted play, The Play That Goes Wrong.

Opening under the title The Murder Before Christmas, their comedy based on real-life accidents and problems that can occur in stage productions was an immediate hit. Critics called it 'breathtaking', 'side-splitting', and 'outstanding,' and it moved from its original home at the Old Red Lion Theatre to Trafalgar Studios, and then premiered on London's West End in 2014, where it is still playing today.

Shortly after that, the play premiered on Broadway in 2017, featuring the original London cast and film director J. J. Abrams making his debut as a theatrical producer. After 745 regular performances, it transferred Off-Broadway to New World Stages. The production was suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic but reopened in October 2021 and is still running.

While bringing laughs worldwide with productions in over 30 countries (including China, Hungary, France, Singapore, Puerto Rico, Brazil, and Mexico), Mischief Theatre has a serious mission in mind.

"We Give Everyone the Opportunity to Let Go and Embrace Some Silliness. At Mischief we are serious about silliness. We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to break free from the shackles of everyday life and escape with us to a world of carefully choreographed chaos, merry mishaps and timeless comedy. A place where you can take a pause from reality and laugh until you cry. It is this belief that lies at the heart of our company and underpins everything we do – we call it ridiculous escapism."

Focusing on their five beliefs of "Laughter as a tonic, The Power of the Ensemble, Honoring where we have come from, Constantly challenging ourselves to develop and improve, Giving back," they have expanded the success of that first play into something that can only be called a comedy empire spanning theatre and television. Theatrical shows include Peter Pan Goes Wrong, The Comedy About a Bank Robbery, Groan Ups, Magic Goes Wrong, Mind Mangler, and The Comedy About Spies, which opened on the West End in April of 2025.

In 2016, Mischief Theatre was approached by the BBC to conduct a televised Christmas special consisting of an adaptation of Peter Pan Goes Wrong. When it was a huge success, the BBC commissioned the company to develop a new Christmas special in 2017, A Christmas Carol Goes Wrong. They have since followed that up with two seasons of The Goes Wrong Show, where each episode is a new play performed by their fictional Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society.

90.jpg
The Goes Wrong Show premied in the UK on December 23, 2019.

The Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society is the amateur theatre troupe that tries to mount The Murder at Haversham Manor in The Play That Goes Wrong. Much like Mischief itself, they are university students who spend their free time outside of classes producing shows. After the great success of The Play That Goes Wrong, the writers continued using the members of the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society across all of the company's Goes Wrong productions and their personalities are fleshed out over time.

artwork-play-that-goes-wrong-london.jpg
Still causing mayhem and delighting audiences on the West End after 10 hilarious years, this smash hit production shows no signs of slowing down.

The great success of Mischief Theatre has a simple secret, according to the founders:

Jonathan Sayer said in an interview: "The secret is a deep sense of respect. [...] We're in the rehearsal room all day, and then we all go for dinner. We find each other fun, and we find each other funny." Henry Lewis echoed those thoughts: "We're just used to working together. Ideas flow. None of us is hugely precious. We'll try things out; if they work, then great. If they don't work, we'll adjust them, or we'll try something new all together. And we're always happy with that."
