Director's Note
The Phantom of the Opera is a show that looms large in our collective imagination. It’s the longest-running musical in Broadway history, yet it owes its roots to opera—an art form musical theater once supplanted. That irony isn’t lost on me. Perhaps it’s fitting: Phantom bridges the grandeur of opera and the accessibility of modern musical storytelling, creating a hybrid that continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
So, what makes The Phantom of the Opera so irresistible? Is it the sweeping score? The unforgettable spectacle—the falling chandelier, the candlelit lake, the lavish costumes? Or is it the dark, hypnotic love triangle that pulls us into a world where obsession masquerades as devotion? For me, it’s all of those things. But I suspect, above all, it’s the Phantom himself who keeps us coming back.
At its core, Phantom is a story about loneliness—about what happens to a person who is never truly seen or loved. The Phantom is both a monster and a mirror. Rejected by the world, he builds a fantasy realm in the shadows, where he controls everything but the one thing he craves most: love. When Christine enters that world, he tries to make her the final piece in his perfect creation—and in doing so, becomes the very cruelty he once fled from.
His actions are inexcusable, yes—but not incomprehensible. Who hasn’t felt the sting of isolation? Who hasn’t longed to be chosen, to be cherished? The Phantom’s tragedy is that his yearning turns possessive, and his love becomes a cage. And yet, despite his darkness, we understand him.
This production is deeply personal to me. I fell in love with The Phantom of the Opera as a teenager—and now, I’ve had the honor of directing it with a cast made up entirely of teens. It’s been a full-circle moment. Their talent, discipline, and hard work have blown me away, proving that youth isn’t a limitation—it’s a superpower.
To direct The Phantom of the Opera as part of our inaugural youth season here at The Ruth Academy, in the new home of the theater that made me who I am, is a dream realized. I hope this production haunts you in all the right ways.
