Director's Note
By David Eggers
In the Fall of 1993, right after graduating college and my second season of summer stock in Indiana, I settled into my first Chicago apartment with my best friend, got an actor ‘survival job,’ and started attending my first professional auditions - one of which was for the ‘sit-down’ production of Forever Plaid, in Minneapolis. Next thing I knew, I was driving a small Uhaul packed with all my meager belongings, up to the Twin Cities. I thought, “Well, I’ll do this for six months, then return to Chicago, to keep building my career.”
Little did I know I’d fall so deeply in love with Forever Plaid, with its heart and humor, and with the characters (I played “Sparky,” but also got to learn and perform “Smudge”)!
If that show hadn’t closed two years and two months after I joined the company, I might have stayed even longer. In fact, I did continue with the show: upon the Minneapolis closing, I immediately joined the Las Vegas ‘sit-down’ company, and performed “Sparky” for another six months there!
A few years, and a few Broadway shows later, I was invited to reprise “Sparky” in the charming holiday version of Plaid, called Plaid Tidings, at Cincinnati Playhouse, directed by none other than the writer and original director of Forever Plaid himself, Stuart Ross!
Plaid is the gift that keeps on giving, not just to me, but to audiences far and wide. It’s a favorite of regional theaters all over the country, not only because the music is so joyful and wonderful with its silky, smooth, four-part harmonies, expertly arranged by the late James Raitt, an incredible musician who was lost far too soon, in 1994, but also because of the characters Mr. Ross created. In “Smudge,” “Sparky,” “Francis,” and “Jinx,” we can see the possibility of our own hopes and dreams, the humanity of our own foibles and weaknesses, the inspiration for our own resilience and commitment, and the universality of having to say goodbye in the end. The characters’ familiarity, plus their humility and their good-natured humor, and the fact that they’ve been given a chance to come back to Earth to do the thing they wanted, but didn’t get to do in life - keep audiences coming back for more and more Plaid.
It’s been an incredible experience for me, too, to come back to these characters again, not as the young man I once was, but as an adult with decades more life under his belt, as a father to two teenagers with dreams in their hearts, and as a professional director and choreographer.
I remember the day in the studio, when watching this company run the final scene in the show, I had to wipe the tears from eyes… because they ‘got it.’ The characters were there. The singing was there. The honesty in the acting was there.
With the help of the incomparably talented Anne Puzey and the ferociously organized Ashtyn Waters, plus the help of our incredibly talented designers - Jason Baldwin, Michael Gray, Timothy Riggs, Dvorah Governale, Megan Heaps, Emile Ronhaar, and Emilie & Paris Lelacheur - and the guidance of Jenny Barlow, Meagan Downey, Shane Candelaria, Scott Freeland, and many others, our mission is complete.
While it’s yet again time for me to let go of Plaid, my hopes are that you will embrace the gift of this production that we created for you, and that down the road, Plaid will continue to find us all.

Dedication
Forever Plaid
is dedicated to the “good guys”;
to the guys who wheeled the projector carts for the AV club;
to the guys who saved their allowance to give their
parents a special night on the town for their anniversary;
to the guys who carried an extra handkerchief;
to the guys who never went beyond first base,
and if they did, they didn’t tell anyone.
