A Note from the Director

On behalf of all of us at The Ruth, thank you for showing up. We are genuinely grateful every time someone chooses to share their talent and time with us.

I am positively giddy to conjure The Addams Family. I love comedy, and I love family, and this show lives at the crossroads of both. Our immersive design will surround the audience and demand performances that are iconic and alive.

We are looking for artists who are fearless, playful, and specific. In this production, we are centering “more Addams in Addams,” seeking interpretations that honor the iconic characters while allowing your individuality to animate them. Dance will be a vital part of our storytelling, as well as brilliant comedic timing. Strange is normal and normal is… deeply suspicious.

I could not be more thrilled to be surrounded by such a wickedly talented team: the incomparable Kacey Udy creating a haunting and spectacular world through set design, the brilliant Sayoko Knode conjuring quirky and hilarious movement as our choreographer, Justin Bills summoning the score as Music Director, and Mike Romney keeping us all deliciously on track as Assistant Director. Let us not forget Ashtyn Waters guiding the chaos with precision as our Production Stage Manager.

Also! I deeply miss the electricity of in-person auditions for an initial call. So! I will be offering both in-person and video submissions. Please do what works best for you. But if at all possible, I would love to see you in the flesh.

Whether this is your first audition at The Ruth or your fiftieth return from the grave, please know your time and your courage matter to us. You are the lifeblood of this theatre, and we are honored every time you walk through our doors.

We cannot wait to meet you.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Jenny Barlow

Director, The Addams Family

P.S. Snaps are highly encouraged. ðŸ–¤

In-Person Audition

We’ll be hosting in-person auditions in our The Ruth Ballroom and Club Lounge on Monday, March 2nd from 6:00 - 10:00 pm. Doors will open at 5:30 pm.

At 6:00 pm we will have an open dance call for all roles (except for folks going out for Fester, Grandma, Lurch, Thing, and Cousin It). We will review the Addams Dance Combo briefly before dancing everyone in groups. No sign up needed, just show up & we’ll take your name down!

At 7:00 pm we will hear vocalists in the Club Lounge with a live accompanist. Everyone DOES have to sign up for a slot to be seen.

We ask you to prepare 30 seconds of an upbeat, contemporary Broadway musical comedy style song. Any piano introduction should be as brief as possible. Have sheet music or a digital copy ready for the accompanist. This is for ALL roles.

Video Audition Submission Details

All individuals wishing to be considered for any role must submit a video of themselves:

  1. Singing approximately 30 seconds of an upbeat, contemporary Broadway musical comedy style song. Please introduce yourself and song selection, and keep any instrumental introductions brief as possible.
  2. Anyone going out for a role (other than Uncle Fester, Grandma, Lurch, Thing, and Cousin It) also needs to film themselves performing the dance combination.

Notes:

  • Make sure your video link is public and Google Drive files are “open to anyone with the link."
  • Check your sound and image before sending, making sure we can hear and see you and see your feet when you dance!
  • Again, most people will have 2 elements to the video: singing and dancing.
  • Videos are due 11:59 pm on Monday, March 9, 2026.
  • Email auditions@theruth.org if you have any questions, not the Box Office.

A Note About Casting -

At The Ruth & Nathan Hale Theater, we seek to honor the intentions of the works we produce. If nothing specific is given by the original playwright regarding the characteristics of any given role, and/or if those characteristics do not affect the intended story in any significant way, we will not consider any certain person or type over others when casting.

We invite anyone and everyone to audition for any and all of our productions, regardless of any physical attribute, gender, race, age, ability, ethnicity, orientation, or experience. All are welcome at The Ruth.

Our company traditionally works with a double-cast system. Moving forward, we are looking to increase the number of performers who are single-cast (performing in all scheduled performances). This will help maintain consistency and streamline the rehearsal/performance process.

If you can commit to a single cast role, please indicate that on your audition form.

We understand that not everyone can make this level of commitment. If you are only available for double-casting, we still welcome and encourage you to audition.

Character Descriptions

(All roles are available. We are looking for a diverse cast with a variety of body types.)

Gomez Addams

Vocal Range: Bb2 - G4
Stage Age: 35 - 55
Character Notes: A suave man of Spanish descent who adores his wife and children and takes immense pride in being an Addams. Gomez finds himself trapped between his daughter and his wife, being forced to hide Wednesday’s big secret from Morticia. He has great comedic timing and is a strong dancer. Spanish accent is a plus!

Morticia Addams

Vocal Range: G3 - Bb5
Stage Age: 35 - 55
Character Notes: The beautiful, leggy and mysterious head of the Addams family who believes strongly in family tradition. Morticia is unnerved thinking that Gomez is hiding something from her. She is confident and sexy with a side of dry wit. She is a strong mover (tango skills are a plus!)

Wednesday Addams

Vocal Range: A3 - E5
Stage Age: 18 - 22
Character Notes: Gothic big sister Wednesday who has her father's heart and her mother’s sensibility falls in love with a “normal” boy who she brings home to meet the family. Wednesday is trying to balance her relationships with “strange” family with that of her new love and his “normal” family. Wednesday showcases compassion, a bit of stubbornness and strong will. She has a strong belt.

Pugsley Addams

Vocal Range: A3 - F5
Stage Age: 10 - 13
Character Notes: The youngest of the Addams Family, Pugsley loves to be tortured by his big sister. He is lost trying to figure out his place now that she has a new boyfriend and family dynamics are changing. Pugsley is charming and funny, ideally with an unchanged singing voice.

Uncle Fester

Vocal Range: C3 - G4 (optional C5)
Stage Age: 30 - 50
Character Notes: Serving as the narrator of the show, Uncle Fester is lovable, childish, enthusiastic and highly incorrigible. Fester has great comedic timing and a tenor voice. Ukulele skills a plus!

Grandma

Vocal Range: G4 - F5
Stage Age: 102
Character Notes: Fun, quirky and feisty, Grandma always has a trick up her sleeve. Grandma is wise, wacky and sometimes a bit crass. She has great comedic timing and physicality.

Lurch

Vocal Range: Eb2 - E4
Stage Age: 25 - 50
Character Notes: A man of few words, Lurch is the Addams Family butler. His unmistakable commanding presence is accented by grunts, moans and deliberate movement. Must have great non-verbal story-telling abilities (think: facial expressions and sound). Lurch has a rich bass voice.

Mal Beinecke

Vocal Range: C3 - A4
Stage Age: 35 - 55
Character Notes: The uptight father of Lucas and the cold-shouldered husband to Alice, cynical Mal meets the Addams with skepticism. He finds the Addams to be too bizarre for his liking and cannot fathom being related to them.

Alice Beinecke

Vocal Range: Ab3 - G#5
Stage Age: 35 - 55
Character Notes: Lucas’s mother and Mal’s wife, Alice is strongly devoted to her family. She presents herself as reserved and collected (even when speaking in rhyme) until she learns to unleash her wild side at dinner with the Addams. She is a strong comedic actress with a strong belt.

Lucas Beinecke

Vocal Range: C3 - C5
Stage Age: 18 - 22
Character Notes: The hopeful romantic and son of Alice & Mal, Lucas has fallen in love with Wednesday and intends to marry her. He is optimistic and hopeful yet struggles to find the balance between his ‘normal’ family and the macabre Addams. Strong singer.

The Ancestors

Vocal Range: All Vocal Ranges, Male and Female
Stage Age: 18+
Character Notes: The Addams ancestors from various eras serve as the chorus for the show and help bring the story to life. They will be featured both singing and dancing, throughout the entire show (once relapsed from the family crypt!). Seeking actors with both vocals and dancing abilities. Pointe work for one of the ancestor roles is a plus!

Thing + Cousin It

Vocal Range: SA (Unchanged Voice)
Stage Age: 12+
Character Notes: Iconic Addams Family members, Thing & Cousin It will weave in and out as the story unfolds. No speaking necessary. Must be comfortable with tight spaces!
