A Note from the Director
Step into the world of Charles Dickens with a bold new staging of the beloved holiday classic. Through the perspective of Ebenezer Scrooge, A Christmas Carol becomes a journey of memory, reflection, consequence, and choice as ghosts force him to confront the life he has built—and the man he still could become. Filled with music, warmth, humor, and theatrical magic, this production invites audiences to become part of the streets and spirit of Victorian London.

A Note About Casting -
At The Ruth & Nathan Hale Theater, we seek to honor the intentions of the works we produce. If nothing specific is given by the original playwright regarding the characteristics of any given role, and/or if those characteristics do not affect the intended story in any significant way, we will not consider any certain person or type over others when casting.
We invite anyone and everyone to audition for any and all of our productions, regardless of any physical attribute, gender, race, age, ability, ethnicity, orientation, or experience. All are welcome at The Ruth.
Our company traditionally works with a double-cast system. Moving forward, we are looking to increase the number of performers who are single-cast (performing in all scheduled performances). This will help maintain consistency and streamline the rehearsal/performance process.
If you can commit to a single cast role, please indicate that on your audition form.
We understand that not everyone can make this level of commitment. If you are only available for double-casting, we still welcome and encourage you to audition.
Character Descriptions
(All roles are available. We are looking for a diverse cast with a variety of body types.)
Ebeneezer Scrooge
Singing Role
Male Presenting, able to play 50+
Character Notes: Ebenezer Scrooge is a squeezing, wrenching, grasping old miser—solitary as an oyster and fiercely guarded against human connection. Having spent a lifetime valuing wealth and security above all else, Scrooge has learned to ignore empathy and compassion, becoming not simply an extraordinary villain, but more a man shaped by a world and a culture that prizes profit over people.
Ghost of Jacob Marley / Undertaker
Singing Role
Male Presenting, able to play 40+
Character Notes: Jacob Marley was Scrooge’s former business partner, dead these seven years and doomed to wander in chains forged by a life consumed by greed, isolation, and indifference to others. Once much like Scrooge himself, Marley returns as both a warning and a reflection of the future awaiting Scrooge if he refuses to change. Actor doubles as Undertaker.
Ghost of Christmas Past / Turkey Child / Street Urchin
Singing Role
Male or Female Presenting, able to play 9-12
Character Notes: The Ghost of Christmas Past is a gentle but unwavering spirit who guides Scrooge through moments from his earlier life. Ghost of Christmas Present
Singing Role
Male or Female Presenting, able to play 30+
Character Notes: The Ghost of Christmas Present is larger than life, joyful, theatrical, and full of warmth, laughter, and energy. Beneath the humor and celebration, however, Present forces Scrooge to confront the lives, struggles, and humanity of the people around him in the here and now.

Non-Singing Role
Female Presenting, able to play 8-12

Non-Singing Role
Female Presenting, able to play 7-10
Character Notes: Little Fan is Ebenezer Scrooge’s younger sister, remembered during his journey into the past. She is warm and gentle, representing one of the few bright spots in Scrooge’s childhood. Non-Singing Role
Male Presenting, able to play 5-8
Character Notes: Tiny Tim is the youngest of the Cratchit children. Though physically fragile and reliant on a crutch, he is a source of deep love and joy in his family.
